Services Required
of NYS Public Schools
to Private and Parochial Students
|
|
|
|
|
State and federal laws and regulations require that the
following services be provided by public school districts to private and
parochial students no matter where their schools of choice may be.
If the private school in question is far removed from the public school
district, it can contact with a closer district to provide these services. |
Health and
Welfare
Services |
Private school students
must be provided with the same health and welfare services as public
school students. These services may include:
|
* Taking medical
histories
* Vision and hearing tests
* Dental examinations
* Speech therapy
* Psychological services
|
* Health screening
* Health records
* First aid
* Social Work |
Textbook
Loan
|
Public school boards
purchase and loan texts to all pupils residing in their districts,
including those who attend private or parochial schools.
|
Computer
Software
Loan
|
School districts purchase
computer software, which is then available for loan to district pupils
enrolled in private or parochial schools. |
Library
Materials
Loan
|
School library materials
other than texts are available for loan to district pupils enrolled in
private or parochial schools. |
|
Transportation
Services
|
Transportation is provided
for K-8 students who live 2-15 miles from their private/parochial school,
and to g.9-12 students who live 3-15 miles from their schools. If
districts offer transportation to public school students beyond these
state-set limits, they must provide the same level of service to private
school students living within their boundaries. This rule does not apply
to city districts.
|
Dual
Enrollment
|
Students in nonpublic
schools may also enroll in public school programs in occupational,
handicapped, and gifted education programs, if these programs are
available in the public schools. Transportation between the private and
public schools must be provided for these programs.
