Eastern Monroe County is home to 10 suburban school districts, where children go to
community schools, schools that reflect each district's needs and values. But working
alone can be a drawback when a school district needs to:
- update its instructional or administrative technology,
- provide state-of-the-art job training
- educate children with special needs,
- better manage the district's business,
- provide comprehensive academic enrichment activities.
That's why, almost 50 years ago, New York State created Boards of
Cooperative Educational Services, or BOCES, as cost-effective regional partnerships
linking rural and suburban school districts. They provide districts with "the BOCES
advantage." Each BOCES is a cooperative extension of its component school districts.
For Monroe #1 BOCES, these districts are: Brighton, East Irondequoit, East Rochester,
Fairport, Honeoye Falls-Lima, Penfield, Pittsford, Rush-Henrietta, Webster, and West
Irondequoit.
Through BOCES, these districts can work together to provide programs and services they
would not otherwise be able to offer. Shared services give districts a major economic
advantage: greater cost savings.
Monroe #1 BOCES operates more than 80 programs and services for area school districts. It
is a major contributor to the recognized excellence of Monroe County schools and their
ability to adapt to the rapidly changing needs of the community.
